I’m mourning the loss of Gwen Ifill, a fantastic journalist who covered the White House, Congress and national campaigns during three decades for The Washington Post, The New York Times, NBC and, most prominently, PBS. She died on Monday at a hospice in Washington at age 61. It’s a pity that only a few people outside of the United States know her or know of her. She was an absolute pioneer.
The cause was complications of uterine cancer, her brother Roberto said.
In a distinguished career, Gwen Ifill was in the forefront of a journalism vanguard as a black woman in a field dominated by Stupe White Men. Maybe she chose the right moment to die; the moment she heard of the horrendous appointment of Stephen Bannon, the neo nazi supremacist named by Donald Trump as his Chief of Staff. Yes, Gwen Ifill certainly did not want to relive the KKK era, the McCarthy era in the 21st Century. She was too good to deserve that.
