Daniel Schorr, a reporter and commentator who over 60 years grew from a feisty young gun to a well-respected and often-skeptical elder statesman of television and radio, died yesterday. He was 93 and until early this month was still offering regular commentaries on National Public Radio. Why do I mention Schorr? Because he’s one of my heroes. Yes, I have many and they come in all sorts and varieties.

Schorr – past the CBS days and already on CNN –  was an impassioned defender of free speech even when he abhorred its content. He once publicly denounced his boss Ted Turner’s call for a ban on violent movies, and he became unlikely friends with fellow First Amendment activist and founder member of The Mothers of Invention, Frank Zappa.

Schorr was also a frequent critic of what is now often called “the mainstream media,” resigning from CBS in 1976 because he felt the network was too timid when he came under fire for leaking the contents of a Congressional report on illegal FBI and CIA  activities.

Schorr’s biggest achievement in over 60 years  of broadcasting  was, undoubtedly, a well deserved   spot on the late President Richard Nixon‘s “enemies list.”

Ted Turner defended Mr. Schorr when Senator Barry Goldwater, the conservative Arizona Republican, wanted him fired. Goldwater had held a grudge since 1964, when Mr. Schorr, while at CBS, reported on the enthusiasm of right-wing Germans for Goldwater as he secured the presidential nomination that year. Mr. Schorr noted that a planned postconvention Goldwater trip mainly involved time at an American military recreation center in Berchtesgaden, site of a favorite Hitler retreat. Both Schorr and Goldwater spoke or understood German.

Gerald Thomas: a volta do que não foi

Nove meses depois de anunciar que abandonara o teatro, o diretor recria, em Londres, sua companhia; estreia é em outubro

Parecia coisa de futebol, mas sem direito a despedida em grande arena (apesar de as arenas estarem tanto para as artes cênicas quanto para os esportes): em setembro do ano passado, Gerald Thomas dizia adeus ao teatro numa longa carta em seu blog, com um título igualmente longo (“Manifesto/Minha Independência ou Morte – Tudo a Declarar – It’s a Long Good Bye”).

Num mundo interconectado onde, a seu ver, a cultura, a História e a arte de transformar que ele conhecera se perdem em frivolidades, Gerald preferia partir para outra a render-se ao iTheatre. Eis que, nove meses depois, como sói entre atletas arrependidos, o diretor volta, na moita, aos palcos, recriando em Londres — território onde pouco trabalhou — sua Dry Opera Company (Companhia da Ópera Seca). Nesta entrevista, direto de Nova York, mais novidades.

O GLOBO: O que o fez mudar de ideia tão rápido?

GERALD: Conversei com amigos, dentre eles Philip Glass, e percebi que mesmo esses momentos de “se sentir um zero à esquerda” faziam parte do que somos. Mas sair é uma coisa: sai-se por esgotamento, como foi o caso em setembro do ano passado. Olhei para minha vida e meu trabalho, e não gostei do que vi. Entrar de novo é mais parecido com ter que pedir licença para viver. Comecei a construir o caminho de volta pela Inglaterra da minha adolescência, onde casei as três primeiras vezes e criei um filho, mas que não me conhecia bem e com a qual tenho uma relação de amor e ódio.

Da ida à volta, foi exatamente o tempo até um parto…
Um parto de quíntuplos, porque é duro parir uma identidade em vez de uma peça. Você redescobre sua obra inteira e a enxerga como se estivesse vendo algo de um estranho.
Não reconhece nada. Olha tudo aquilo justamente como as pessoas que diziam que não entendiam o teatro de Gerald Thomas. Ao renascer, vou me expondo a esse povo todo em Londres sem saber o que está pela frente…

Como tem sido o processo de seleção e quando pretende estrear? Já existe o embrião de um primeiro texto?

Vi perto de 600 atores em uma semana. Aproveitei um monte. Vamos ver quem resiste ao workshop, em agosto, para a estreia, em outubro. Vou desenvolver textos para pessoas como o Kevin, um extraordinário ator, a Maria de Lima, uma portuguesa com sotaque londrino, ou o Dan, com aquela cara de judeu que deixa claro de onde viemos e que vamos para a lama. Estou brincando com o título “Cain unable”: foneticamente soa como “Cain and Abel”, os dois irmãos bíblicos, mas quer dizer “Caim incapacitado”. Os atores ingleses têm uma incrível energia. Podem não ter muita cultura, e isso me impressionou: a grande maioria não sabia quem era Samuel Beckett ou Richard Wagner, nem definir homo sapiens.

Mas aqui em Nova York a atmosfera do East Village e do teatro de onde venho está cansada. O establishment venceu mesmo! Quase não há resistência…

Já no teatro britânico existe uma longa história de agitprop theater, ou seja, o teatro do opositor.

Em setembro você dizia não estar pronto para o iTheatre.

A nova companhia incluirá o meio digital?

Sim. O próprio material dos testes já está disponível em Vimeo (melhor que YouTube porque comporta uma hora ou mais). Mas iTheater seria migrar para o território virtual.

Isso, não! Porém, ter um departamento de mídias, incluindo a tecnologia G4, sim, com prazer.

Você vai se transferir de NY para Londres? Está casado?

Desde dezembro passado estou nessa ponte NY-LON: acho que não consigo me desgrudar mais dessas calçadas. Casei de novo, sim, mas não estou a fim de dizer com quem nem dar detalhes.

Como estão os outros projetos?

Cinema e o livro “Suicide note”…

Fiz um ensaio, que está no meu videolog, intitulado “Book”.

Não é cinema, não é teatro, mas sim uma narrativa, um fio condutor de imagens e ideias que irão pontuar o filme cujo título será “Copywriter” (ideia de Claudio Martins), já que o original, “Ghost writer”, foi literalmente roubado pelo Polanski. Tem gente captando em vários lugares, inclusive no Brasil. Será uma espécie de thriller, inteiramente em película.

Um de seus últimos trabalhos no Brasil foi sobre sua mãe, que falecera. Como andam seus diálogos com ela?

Nossa, você instalou microfones aqui em casa? Tenho pensado muito, muito nela. Em como não consegui lidar direito com os últimos anos. E que a coisa teve que se resumir numa peça, através da qual tentei pedir perdão.

Pelo quê?

Falhei em tudo. Não estive lá quando ela mais precisou de mim. Coloquei-a num asilo e achei que estava o.k. Não, não estava.

Você assistiu à Copa?

Claro. Fiquei muitíssimo triste com a saída do Brasil. Quase morro.

E quando você passa por aqui?

Nunca excluo o Brasil. Mas, se eu for esperar um convite, fico sentado e viro estátua de sal.

Mr. Wells said at a briefing in Houston that the installation of the new cap was completed Monday evening, ahead of schedule. “It really went extremely well,” he said. “But we know that the job’s not over yet.”

Great, let’s all light our lighters and spill the fuel of our dreams. It’s a circus. It’s all happening in a huge tent where time has stopped!

I’m part of that romantic generation who saw Tower Records open its doors here on Broadway and E4th Street. Today, Tower is gone and even, Virgin (which destroyed Tower) is gone. All Towers are gone. All Towers once erected, gone. All gone.
